Follow the water
Inspect upstream collection, side drains, cross drainage, culverts, outlets and erosion. The visible road defect may be downstream of the real problem.
Standardise common interventions
Predefined drain, headwall, culvert and erosion-control details can reduce redesign for routine conditions while engineers retain responsibility for hydraulic capacity and site-specific structures.
Record structures as assets
Culverts and drainage structures should have locations, dimensions, condition, inspection dates and maintenance history rather than existing only on old drawings.
